What really happened in the forest? Hidden crimes and secrets of the past converge in a riveting thriller by Anne Frasier, the New York Times bestselling author of Find Me.
No strangers to evil, criminal profiler Reni Fisher and detective Daniel Ellis both still grapple with traumatizing pasts. It unites them. So has a crime they must solve before someone else dies.
At a campsite on California’s Pacific Crest Trail, a guide is murdered and three young hikers vanish without a trace. The only lead is a puzzle in itself: a video of the crime scene, looking eerily staged, uploaded to social media. The girl who posted it can’t be found. Is it a viral hoax gone unspeakably wrong, or is there something more sinister at play in the forest?
The case intensifies when one of the missing is found wandering down a dirt road, confused and afraid. As Reni and Daniel struggle to sort fact from fiction, a secret past collides with the present, threatening to sever their relationship. Are some truths too much to bear? Will this be the case that finally breaks them?
From Anne
Tell Me was a very strange book to write. I’d just arrived in California for location research when the pandemic hit. The governor’s safe-at-home order put an end to my research plans. When it became apparent the pandemic wasn’t going anywhere, I revised the book’s plot and changed the setting from an area I’d never been to my safe-at-home location, the Mojave Desert, more specifically a little unincorporated town near Joshua Tree. Not a terrible place to be stuck, but odd how, out of necessity, my real-life location became the location of the book.
The desert is a magical and wonderful place, but it’s also a place in peril. With that in mind, I’d like to direct your attention to the work being done by two wonderful organizations, Mojave Desert Land Trust and The Center for Biological Diversity. Please do check them out and consider supporting their conservation efforts. I’ll also include some other deserving organizations of note: Theodore Payne Foundation, California Native Plant Society, Joshua Tree National Park, Joshua Tree National Park Association, Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, Joshua Tree National Park Search & Rescue (JOSAR), San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Search and Rescue Dogs of the United States. Check out their websites and consider supporting one or more of them!
Acknowledgments
I’d like to thank the state of California for legalizing recreational marijuana. Edibles helped get me through the lockdown, but alas, they weren’t much help when it came to writing this book. I’d especially like to thank my daughter, Martha, for all of her assistance, going above and beyond in an abnormal situation, hauling supplies to my remote writing location, a place where there was no mail, no UPS, and no Amazon. Did my year of simple living result in deep reflection and personal growth? Nope. It was just about getting through each day, and I applaud everyone for doing the same. I wish you peace, love, and healing.
